Love the site. Want more. I thought Lyman did some outboard runabouts. I had a Thompson 15, and saw a lot of Penn Yans. Thought I saw some Lymans in the sixties.

As a teenager, my summer job was to be the dockboy and caretaker of MIZPAH, the 32 footer belonging to E F McDonald. I have a not very sharp photo of that boat at Mackinac Island. Whatever became of her? (Ted-The last time I saw the Mizpah it was up on blocks under a shed roof in Traverse City, Mi with the engines gone and hardwares stripped. What a story that boat could tell!)

Just bought a 15'10" Lyman runabout on a trip to Michigan. Needs restoration, but is sound. Will begin restoration soon ... noticed the wood for decks, etc. is still available via the internet. I grew up in Sandusky and having been around Lymans all my live, its important to refurbish Lymans, getting them back to as near original as possible, I know it is very expensive to do so, leave alone finding parts, but they are out there. It's very noticable when boating on Sandusky Bay.I have a boathouse in Sandusky and there are many, many Lyman's still around the Sandusky Bay and Lake Erie Island area.

I just acquired a 16 ft. wooden Lyman boat, motor, and trailer from an aquaintance at work. The hull is reportedly still solid and water-tight. Only the wooden trim around the windshield needs some repair. I am told I need to strip the old spar varnish and apply a few new coats. This is a dream come true for me, as I reminesce about my early childhood days, riding in my father's and grandfather's boats. I have a lot of work ahead of me, but I feel when it's done, there will be plenty of fishing and daydreaming on Lake Erie.

i have a 18 ft lyman that looks like the smaller boat on the cover of the new book legends of the lakes. it has been in dry storage since 1952 and never seen water since that time either. i am on an island and wish to bring this boat to the mainland and home. my questions are, how to prepair boat for 1 mile trip to shore and is it valuable as it is in mint condition and not been in the water for over 50 years? hope to hear from someone soon. thankyou.

Dad had a 1954 15' runabout with a 25 hp Evinrude Big Twin. The boat was bought from Hoffman Brothers in Clifton Heights, PA and moored on the Bohemia River at Hack's Point, MD -- at the top of the Chesapeake Bay. Dad painted the boat a blue "fade" starting with a medium blue on the top strake, with ach successive strake was cut 1:1 with white. On the water it looked sharp -- certainly different than all the other white lapstrake boats -- Lymans and Barbours. On occasion, Dad would remove the Evinrude and replace it with a 1922 Elto Quad which used two knobs (not a rope) to start. At those times I had to sit on the bow with a paddle and keep us under control while fiddled with that old motor! Tha

Although I come from a family with no boating history, my late father-in-law was an avid boater/fisherman on Lake Erie and had owned a Lyman prior to his getting sick. I just bought my first boat this summer (a pontoon) mainly to enjoy with my children on Portage Lakes. I really enjoy being on the water, and also have an appreciation for master carpentry & the old school way of doing things. I love the look of the Lyman boat and am currently gathering info and perhaps will own a Lyman one day.

I have a client who wants us to build an authentic tender for his 1950'3 Matthews yacht. I understand that Lyman provided tenders for these boats. Does any one have an idea where I can go to find plans for these tenders. We only build historicly accurate lapestrake boats..

I'm 81 years old, and I love these boats. We've always owned Lyman boats. We had a row boat that you could put an outboard motor on, 1940's outboard runabout, and now a 1965 25' sleeper. My daughter now has her own Lyman (1964 18' outboard runabout) that we are enjoying. We are very happy that these memories can be shared.

I grew up in Mansfield Ohio and we had an 18' Lyman boat at Eastside Harbor (I think) on Lake Erie when I was about 6 (38 years ago). I "googled" Lyman today and ran across your site. Nice job, it really brings back some memories!! Thanks!

Sigh! Just stumbled on your delightful Site. My Dad had a 15-foot Lyman with a 10HP Onan engine that we together, and I alone, used for fun and fishing on Long Island over fifty years ago. I still think of the boat and, if fact, remember its license number - 10EXXXX.

My husband and I are currently in the process of restoring a 1957 15 1/2 foot Lyman runabout. We were lucky to purchase this complete with the Tee-Nee trailer and a gorgeous 1958 35 hp Johnson Javelin motor from the estate of a gentleman who'd worked in Wadsworth, Ohio repairing and restoring boats. I've nearly single handedly zip stripped the inside and outside of this boat and hope to have it ready for my husband to begin fabricating a new top (that's all it needs) for our little runabout. This will be our second wood boat, as last year we restored what we believe is a 1950's Yellow Jacket (however we haven't been able to confirm positively that that boat is actually a Yellow Jacket). At any rate we do very good restoration and are loving every minute of it. Keep up your good work with this website. I've appreciated the information you've provided. Sincerely, Heidi Ruark P.S. If you know of a website or other outlet we could pursue to try find more information on 1950's Yellow Jacket or possibly Hult-Craft boats, we'd love to hear from you!

been a Lyman fan since the 50's. My brother has a 1953 23' that is in decent shape but a little needy. It's enough to keep the dream alive. The trips out off the Maine coast to seal watch are just great. Glad to have found this site and soon I will have my own Lyman. Al

Dad owned '57 Lyman 16 (16'6") with 35 Johnson sea horse; used on Hudson River and Lake George. I'm thinking about buying 18' or 19' Lyman runabout, whether inboard or outboard. Any more info about 16' 18' or 19' inboards or outboards? I would guess 18' or 19' outboards are rare, if not non-existant at this point. Wonderful to find this website; hope it's expanded soon!

When I was 15 in '69, I enjoyed having a 15" Lyman powered by a 1957 red and White 30hp Johnson. I just put a down payment on a 21' BayKat, (ProSport Boats of Alabama) and reminisced with the dealer (a former Buckeye) about getting caught in sudden storm with 5'-7' closely spaced waves. As I learned the hard way about following seas, and only once submaring into waves in front of the trough, I maneuvered that boat diagonally with, and over the surf for a good twenty minutes till I got to Medlicott's at Long Beach, Lake Erie; I was able to swing her around into the waves and tossed over the anchor in one motion. Safe to shore. I didn't get whipped, but I knew I had venture out a bit too far on my own. Lyman's are definately seaworthy. Thank you for this website to aid in a more vivid memory.

I came across a Lyman outboard intact except broken windshield frame left side, and no glass. Rt side wheel, gauges and motor controls intact it has middle bench seat and rt. side battery box seat and same lift hinged seat on the left transom side. The bow door has the a single ancor cut out design in it. The lyman Sandusky Ohio name plate is on the center dash. This boat looks feasible to restore. Any comment would be appreciated.

I'm very glad I found your web site. We owned a new 15 foot Lyman from Westport Marine in 1954, and used it all over the Long Island Sound. I even worked at the dealership one summer during high school, and grew to love the quality of the complete line. We used to water ski to Northport, Long Island and back to Westport (non stop) behind my 15 foot runabout. It was a great boat.
